COLUMBUS, Ohio – Shiori Fukuda of the Ohio State women’s tennis team has been named ITA Midwest Region Rookie of the Year, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced Monday.
Fukuda is the third Buckeye overall and in the last five years to be named the region’s rookie of the year, joining 2014 honoree Gabriella De Santis and 2016 selection Francesca Di Lorenzo.
A native of Tokyo, Japan, Fukuda was the B1G Freshman of the Year and a unanimous First Team All-Big Ten selection, as well as an Ohio State Scholar-Athlete.
In singles Fukuda was 23-10 overall, posting a 15-3 mark in dual matches on court two. The ITA Midwest Regional Championships runner-up, she is currently ranked No. 101 and was ranked as high as No. 43 during the year. She ended the year with just one loss in her last 13 matches, winning 10 (with two unfinished). In doubles, Fukuda was 21-11 overall and 13-4 in dual matches. She and Anna Sanford are ranked 51st, reaching a high of 15th during the year, and she also is ranked 60th with Maria Tyrina.
