COLUMBUS, Ohio – Redshirt junior Shiori Fukuda of the Ohio State women’s tennis team competed in California at the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships at the Newport Beach Tennis Club.
The tournament featured 128 of the nation’s top collegiate singles players (64 men and 64 women). In its third year, having replaced the ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, it is the lone event on the collegiate tennis calendar to feature competitors from all five divisions playing in the same tournament.
Fukuda was seeded No. 7 and began tournament play vs. Selin Ovunc of Auburn. Fukuda defeated Ovunc, 6-3 6-2 and then took down Lisa Marie Rioux of Oklahoma State, 6-4, 6-2. In the Round of 16, Fukuda fell to Megan Davies of South Carolina, 6-4, 6-2.
This is the last tournament for Fukuda in the fall season. Overall, she notched 13 wins with only four losses. She made it to the singles finals at both the ITA Midwest Regional Championships and the USTA Fall Ranked Spotlight. At the 2019 ITA All-American Championships, Fukuda won two matches in the qualifying rounds and then notched another win in the main draw to reach the Round of 32. Also, at an ITF $15K in Lubbock, Texas, in September, Fukuda reached the doubles final and advanced to the singles quarterfinals.
