COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s swimming finished competition against Michigan, Purdue and Indiana Sunday night at the Ohio State Winter Invite, held at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.

Ohio State added 20 day-two finalists to their day one total of 24. Ohio State had the most finalists of any school competing in the invitational. Sunday was a big day in particular for the Ohio State freshmen.

Freshman Jacob Schuster added to his 200 medley relay and 100 freestyle win Saturday with a 200 freestyle win Sunday. Schuster swam an NCAA “B” cut time of 1:38.05 as Ohio State placed four of the top five swimmers in the first event of the day.

“Jacob had a great weekend and I am very proud of him,” head coach Bill Wadley said. “He had some great swims.”

Another freshman, Alex McCord, picked up his first individual win of the year in the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.75. This is the fourth fastest time by a Buckeye in the 50 freestyle this year and McCord’s fastest 50 freestyle swim of the year.

Senior Ben Savonen would not let the rookies take every event; he finished first in the 200 individual medley, edging another Ohio Statefreshman, Garrett Trebilcock, in the process. This was the captain’s last swim at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.

“What a great experience for Ben,” Wadley said. “He is a perfect example of hard work paying off. He is such a great swimmer and an even better person. We are really going to miss him and his leadership.”

In the last individual event of the invitational, freshman Brett Boston took first in the 200 butterfly. Boston, usually a freestyler, wrapped up the third win of the day for the Ohio State freshmen. In all, Ohio State finished the invitational with four freshmen first-place finishes.

“We are trying to give the younger guys a chance and show some of their hard work paying off.” Wadley said. “If you are patient and work hard you can do well in meets like this.”

Up next: the Buckeyes will look to defend their Big Ten championship in Minneapolis, Minn., February 23-26.
