COLUMBUS, Ohio – A total of four Buckeyes have advanced to the second round of the 2014 NCAA Championships after first-round wins Thursday morning at Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City, Okla. Johnni DiJuliusLogan StieberKenny Courts and Nick Heflin will continue action in their respective championships brackets starting at 8 p.m. ET Thursday.

As a team, Ohio State is in a four-way tie for 11th place with eight points. Penn State is leading all teams with 16.5 points, while Oklahoma State is second (13.5) and Minnesota and Edinboro are tied for third (11). 

The No. 9 seed, DiJulius of the 133-weight class will face David Thorn of Minnesota next.  DiJulius topped Tyler Goodwin of Maryland Thursday with a 14-5 major decision.

The No. 2 seed, Stieber of the 141-weight class faced Lavion Mayes of Missouri. Stieber won by a fall over his opponent in 2:48 minutes. Stieber will face Anthony Collica of Oklahoma State next.

The No. 10 seed, Courts of the 184-weight class, recorded an 8-4 decision win over Kurtis Julson of North Dakota State and will face the No. 7 seed Kevin Steinhaus of Minnesota in the second round.

The final Buckeye still in championship contention is Heflin. Heflin represented the 197-weight class and advanced via an injury default over Paul Rands of Navy. The No.1 seed, Heflin  will face Dan Scherer of Stanford next.

Four Buckeyes will vie for third-place finishes after dropping to wrestlebacks. Nick Roberts, Ian PaddockMark Martin and Nick Tavanello will continue action Thursday evening. Roberts dropped a 9-3 decision to the No. 5 seed Dylan Peters of the 125-weight class. Paddock fell to the No. 11 seed Joshua Kindig of Oklahoma State by a 9-4 decision and will face Christian Barber of UNC next. No. 14 Martin of the 174-weight class dropped a 7-2 decision to Conor Brennan of Rider and will wrestle Jakob Scheffel of WVU. Tavanello faced Ty Walz and lost a close 3-1 sudden victory decision. Tavanello will face Evan Knutson of North Dakota State next.
