COLUMBUS, Ohio – Rising sophomore Jessica Porvasnik will be one of 156 players competing at the 2014 U.S. Women’s Open June 19-22. She will play alongside professional golfers, Weiling Hsu and Erica Popson, for the first two rounds Thursday and Friday. The threesome tees off at 6:56 a.m. Thursday before going off Hole #10 at 12:41 p.m. on Friday.
Thursday/Friday – ESPN2 – 3-7 p.m. EDT
Saturday/Sunday – NBC Sports – 3-6 p.m. EDT
Porvasnik earned her spot in the LPGA’s oldest major championship field by placing second in the Butler, Pa., sectional qualifier on May 12. Pinehurst #2 (7,495 yards – Par 70) served as the site for the men’s U.S. Open last week and will remain so for the U.S. Women’s Open during the upcoming week.
The Buckeye student-athlete was one of 19 teenagers to advance through sectional qualifying and will be one of 25 amateurs taking the course.
Porvasnik doesn’t have to go far for some experienced advice on playing in the tournament as Ohio State head coach Therese Hession competed in seven U.S. Women’s Opens during her professional career. Ohio State alum, Meg Mallon, is a two-time champion of the LPGA major, taking home the hardware in 1991 and 2004.
