COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State women’s volleyball players, Jen Flynn (Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Dana Stearns (So., Bexley, Ohio) have been invited to train for the 1999 World University Games held July 2-10 in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. Flynn, a setter, and Stearns, a middle blocker, will join 16 other collegiate players to train under Ohio State’s head women’s volleyball coach Jim Stone, who had previously been named the head coach of the team.

%^$Flynn ranks fourth in career assists for the Buckeyes with 3,018 with only two years as a setter after playing outside hitter as a freshman. She had 1,205 assists last year, was tied for the team lead in digs (261) and was third on the squad in aces with 26. Stearns ranks fourth in attack percentage at .307 for the Buckeyes and is fourth in career blocks per game at .97. Last season she hit .272 and averaged 3.28 kills per game. The team leader in aces with 40, Dana had a team high of 100 blocks (9-91) and was third in digs with 207.

%^$The 18 student-athletes will train at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, N.Y., May 15-June 12. The final 12-member team will be named before the squad travels to Canada to take on its national team, June 13-17. The team will then train in Chicago, June 18-27, before making the trip to Spain.

%^$The 18 players invited to train with the team are: Outside hitters: Jessica Alvarado (Long Beach State), Nicole Branagh (University of Minnesota), Jennifer Keene (University of Florida), Elsa Stegemann (University of the Pacific) and Jenna Wrobel (Michigan State). Middle Blockers: Elisabeth Bachman (UCLA), Brandelynn Barratt (Long Beach State), Heather Bown (University of Hawai’i), Benishe Dillard (Long Beach State), Dana Stearns (Ohio State), Leslie Tuiasosopo (University of Washington) and Cheryl Weaver (Long Beach State). Opposite Hitters: Tyra Harper (Central Florida), Jennifer Manz (University of Florida), Nancy Meendering (University of Nebraska), Kerri Walsh (Stanford). Setters: Jennifer Flynn (Ohio State), Christine Landry (Michigan State), Jennifer Sanchez (University of Florida).

%^$Stone will be assisted by Cathy George (Western Michigan) and Bob Bertucci (Temple). Kay Rogness will serve as the team leader.
