COLUMBUS, Ohio –Five Buckeyes from the 2021 Spring roster were named Big Ten Distinguished Scholars Thursday by the league office.
Seniors Marissa Birzon and Izzy Rodriguez along with redshirt junior Maddy Lowe, junior Emaly Vatne and sophomore Brittany Duncan made the conference academic award list.
A record 232 Ohio State student-athletes were recognized by the Big Ten Conference with Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Awards. The previous high for Ohio State was 164 in 2019-20.
Big Ten Faculty Representatives established the Distinguished Scholar Award in 2008 to supplement the Academic All-Big Ten program. Distinguished Scholar Award recipients must have earned Academic All-Big Ten recognition in the previous academic year, must have been enrolled full time at the institution for the entire previous academic year (two semesters or three quarters) and earned a minimum GPA of 3.70 or better during the previous academic year, excluding any summer grades. The Academic All-Big Ten threshold is a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher for a student-athlete’s academic career. In all, the B1G honored 2,132 student-athletes across the conference as Big Ten Distinguished Scholars for 2020-21.

Birzon, a forward from East Amhearst, New York, scored eight goals with seven assists in 68 Ohio State games. Rodriguez, a defender from Canton, Michigan, is a 69-game veteran in Scarlet and Gray. Both were named 2021 team captains last spring.
In three seasons of competition, Lowe, a midfielder from Webster, New York, has played in 50 games while Vatne, a forward from Sterling Heights, Michigan, has appeared in 42 Buckeye contests. Duncan, a midfielder from Cincinnati, was credited with five assists last season and has a total of 24 games played in Columbus.
The Ohio State women’s soccer team will resume a traditional competition schedule this fall following a 2021 Spring season that saw the Buckeyes advance to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament and finish second in the Big Ten regular-season.
The Buckeyes will open the 2021 Fall schedule, the 25th season under the direction of head coach Lori Walker-Hock, after an 8-3-3 spring finish.
Notre Dame will host Ohio State in a scrimmage to open the season Aug. 10 in South Bend before the Buckeyes entertain Pittsburgh in a home scrimmage at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium Aug. 13.
The regular-season schedule begins with a road match at BYU Aug. 19.
The next win in the 29-year history of the program will be No. 300. In the 28 previous seasons, the Buckeyes have an overall record of 299-216-55.
The Buckeyes were not only successful on the field last Spring but were equally impressive academically.
A total of 21 Buckeyes were named Ohio State Scholar Athletes, while Rodriguez and junior Kayla Fischer were named Scholar All-Americans by the United Soccer Coaches, who also named Rodriguez a third team All-American defender.
Rodriguez, the Big Ten Defender of the Year and First Team All-Big Ten member in the Spring of 2021, joined freshman Peyton McNamara (Co-Freshman of the Year, All-Big Ten Freshman Team), Fischer (First team All-Big Ten), sophomore Emma Sears (Second Team All-Big Ten), senior Alyssa Baumbick and junior Talani Barnett (both Third Team All-Big Ten) on the all-conference awards list last spring.
