COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields is one of 16 semifinalists for the Davey O’Brien Award, the Davey O’Brien Foundation and its National Selection Committee announced today.
The Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award is presented annually to the best college quarterback, and is the nation’s oldest and most prestigious national quarterback award. The Davey O’Brien Foundation and its National Selection Committee will release the names of the three finalists on Monday, Nov. 25. The 2019 Davey O’Brien winner will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards Thursday, Dec. 12.
Fields, a first-year starter, has accounted for 37 touchdowns through nine games, which is second most in the country behind only Jalen Hurts of Oklahoma. He’s had at least one rushing touchdown and passing touchdown in eight of nine games for the Buckeyes, who are 9-0 and ranked No. 2 in this week’s College Football Playoff poll.
Fields’ 183.53 efficiency rating ranks fifth in the nation as he’s thrown 27 touchdown passes against just one interception. His completion percentage (68.2 percent) is No. 14 nationally.
With Fields leading the way, Ohio State’s offense is averaging 535.9 yards per game – fifth best in the country – and is averaging 51.0 points per game, which ranks first. The Buckeyes have scored 40 or more points in seven of nine games.
