COLUMBUS, Ohio – %^$The Ohio State field hockey team (1-0 overall, 0-0 in the Big Ten) opened its 2000 season with a 2-1 win over Miami (Ohio). The Buckeyes took a 2-0 lead and never looked back. OSU freshman Vanessa Immordino (Roseland, N.J./West Essex) scored the games first goal with 2:46 remaining in the first half to give OSU a lead it would never relinquish.%^$

%^$”It’s always nice to start the season with a win,” head coach Anne Wilkinson said. “I think we got our first-game jitters out of the way. We had a lot of our young players in there – with two of our freshman scoring our goals, which was nice to see.”%^$

%^$Eight minutes into the second half, freshman Mariana Solorzano (Caracas, Venezuela/Humboldt School) scored to give OSU its second goal of the afternoon. With 6:10 remaining in the game, Miami attempted to mount a rally with a goal by Cheryl Iozzi but the OSU defense stiffened the remainder of the game.%^$

%^$Tomorrow, OSU will play host to Southwestern Missouri State, noon, at the Turf Field at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.%^$
