Field Hockey Opens 2022 Season This Weekend in Albany


COLUMBUS, Ohio The curtain lifts on the 52nd season of Ohio State field hockey this weekend, as the Buckeyes head to Albany, N.Y. for two games to kick off the 2022 schedule. Ohio State meets Northeastern in a neutral site game at 3 p.m. or Friday before finishing out the weekend with a game against the host Great Danes on Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Basics

  • Ohio State enters the season ranked No. 22 in the initial National Field Hockey Coaches Association preseason poll.
  • The Buckeyes are one of seven Big Ten teams that are ranked, led by defending national champion and No. 1 Northwestern.
  • Ohio State returns 87.5 percent of its scoring output from last season. Its top goal-scorer were Emma Goldean and Leanne Bough, who each had five tallies.
  • Delaney Lawler, who also returns, was the team’s co-leader in assists last season with three.
  • In goal, junior Abby Danson played in nine games and started eight times. She made 35 saves and also posted a shutout.
  • Head coach Jarred Martin enters his sixth season leading the Buckeyes and has amassed 45 wins in his first five campaigns.
  • He’s assisted this fall by associate head coach Kate Lipton and assistant coach Patrick Cota.

Scouting the Opponents

  • Northeastern was 7-12 last year and 3-3 in CAA play.
  • The Huskies were ranked second in the preseason CAA poll and received one first-place vote. Delaware in the preseason favorite to win the conference.
  • Like Northeastern, UAlbany is also picked to finish second in its league, as the Great Danes were slotted behind defending American East regular season and tournament champion Maine in the preseason poll.
  • The Great Danes were 11-9 last fall and 6-2 in the American East. They advanced to the conference tournament championship game.

What’s Next

  • Ohio State opens its home schedule next weekend when it hosts Lehigh on Sunday, Sept. 4 at noon.
  • The game will be the first regular season contest at a new-look Buckeye Varsity Field, which features a new playing surface, press box and videoboard.
  • Admission to all Ohio State field hockey games is free, as is parking.
