COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State field hockey team (0-1, 0-0 Big Ten) fell to California (1-0, 0-0 Nor Pac), 6-1, Saturday at Maxwell Family Field in Berkley, Calif. Junior Lucy Clayton (Jr., Scarborough, England/Scarborough College) scored the Buckeyes’ lone goal with 9:52 remaining in the first half.

California freshman Valentina Godfrid scored less than three minutes into the first half to take the lead and the Golden Bears never let up. Cal’s second goal of the game was scored by forward Maggie Grimes at 10:48. Ohio State forward Clayton attempted to get the Buckeyes on track with goal off a penalty corner at 9:52 assisted by Jenee Doto (Sr., Ocean View, N.J./Ocean City) and Florencia Stier (Fr., Buenos Aires, Argentina/Washington). Stier’s assist marked her first Ohio State career point. The Golden Bears answered with the first of four goals for Amber Madsen with four minutes remaining.

OSU could not stop Cal’s offense in the second half. Madsen scored three additional goals for California.

Ohio State goalkeeper Lindsay Williams (So., Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) tallied five saves in 70 minutes of play. California goalkeeper Kelly Knapp recorded four saves. The Golden Bears outshot the Buckeyes 26 to 8.

Individually, Clayton led the Buckeyes with one goal and three shots. Vanessa Immordino (Sr., Roseland, N.J./West Essex) tallied three shots and Doto recorded two shots.

The Buckeyes travel to Stanford, Calif., Sunday to take on Pacific at 7 p.m. EDT. OSU finishes its road trip against Stanford at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Stanford, Calif.
