Columbus, OHIO – The Ohio State field hockey team dropped a 2-1 defensive battle to the Maine Black Bears in its first game of the 2004 season. The contest lasted just under three hours as both teams were tied at the end of two overtimes and were forced into a sudden death shootout. Freshman Yesenia Luces recorded the Buckeyes’ first goal of 2004 and notched her first collegiate score.

In the first half Maine struck first on a penalty corner at the 3:17 mark. Junior Meagan Connolly, assisted by senior Emily Dooling, pushed the ball past the OSU defense into the goal. OSU soon evened up the score with Florencia Stier (So., Buenos Aires, Argentina/Washington) making a pass to Luces (Fr., Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago/St. Joseph’s Convent) before the freshman netted the ball behind the Black Bear goalie with 7:51 remaining in the half.

Following a scoreless second half, the game went into overtime. The first extra period continued to be a defensive clash, leaving both teams scoreless and en route to a second overtime. The fourth stanza of the game proved no differently and eventually the contest went through two penalty strokes and a sudden death shootout before there was a decision. The Black Bears were able to overcome the Buckeyes in the final set, recording more goals for the team score, therefore securing the victory.

Goalie Lindsay Williams (Jr., Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) recorded 12 saves for OSU to Jamie Morin’s 11, UMaine’s goalkeeper. The Buckeyes had 14 shots, compared to the Black Bears’ 16.

The Buckeyes’ contest against the Black Bears featured not only the debut of freshman Luces, but also freshmen Mara Adelman (Flossmoor, Ill./Homewood Flossmoor), Jamie Gofgosky (Marathon, N.Y./Marathon Central), Honor Hansen (Encinitas, Calif./La Costa Canyon) and Kelly Terwilliger (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South). In their first collegiate competition, the quintet combined for six shots and one goal on the day.

Ohio State returns to action at 11 a.m. Monday when it faces the Vermont Catamounts in Durham, N.H.
