COLUMBUS, Ohio – An offensive outburst by the Ohio State field hockey team (2-0 overall, 0-0 in the Big Ten) led it to a dominating 6-0 victory over the Southwest Missouri State Bears at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. Forward Mariana Solorzano (Fr., Caracas, Venezuela/Humboldt School) tallied the first multiple-goal game of her brief career with a goal in each half. In goal, Allison Blanton (Jr., Newton, N.J./Kittatinny Regional) recorded her first shutout of the season.
“We were able to spread them out and really put pressure on them,” head coach Anne Wilkinson said. “We were able to get numbers around the ball.
“I thought we did well, defensively. We had the numbers defensively. When we attacked, we were able to get an extra player there to put them in a position where they had to make a lot more decisions. I like the fact that we were able to stretch it out and had a lot of different people score.”
Just four minutes into the contest, Solorzano scored her second goal of the season to give OSU a 1-0 lead. Marije van Nouhuys (Jr., New Lyceum, Netherlands/New Lyceum) gave OSU its second goal of the first half off a pass from Katie Hobson (Sr., Norristown, Pa./Methacton).
A four-goal flurry followed in the second half. Just 32 seconds into the half, Solorzano scored her second goal of the afternoon to increase the OSU lead to 3-0. Aubrey Stock (Sr., Seven Valleys, Pa./Susquehannock), Haley Fox (Jr., Foxboro, Mass./Foxboro) and Jenee Doto (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) followed with goals to give OSU its 6-0 win.
On Wednesday, OSU will play host to Central Michigan at 3 p.m.
