COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State fencing team finished third after four days of competition at the 2009 NCAA Championships in State College, Pa. Host Penn State is the national champion with 195 points, while Notre Dame had 182 victories and Ohio State followed with 166.

The third place finish extended the Buckeyes’ streak of Top 5 finishes at the NCAA Championships to eight, dating back to 2002.

Sophomore Oksana Dmytruk won 22 duels on the women’s side, most of the foil group, and entered the medal round as the top seed. Dmytruk faced off with Notre Dame’s Hayley Reese in the opening round and fell by a narrow margin, 13-11. Lindsay Knauer, in her second career appearance at the NCAA Championships, took nine victories in the competition and finished in 18th place.

Freshmen Margarita Tschomakova and sophomore Falencia Miller each finished with 14 wins in women’s sabre, placing them ninth and 10th, respectively, in the weapon group.

Junior Julia Tikhonova won eight victories in women’s epee and finished 16th, while freshman Miriam Baranov had six wins in epee and finished 21st.
