Ohio State men go 8-1, women 9-2 in final collegiate tune-up for Midwest Conference Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio The third-ranked Ohio State fencing team concluded action at the Northwestern Duals in Evanston, Ill., with the men’s team going 8-1 and the women’s squad going 9-2. The meet was the final collegiate action for the Buckeyes before they travel to Notre Dame Feb. 28-March 1 in search of a seventh-consecutive Midwest Conference title.

The men’s team picked off the top-ranked Penn State men’s team decisively, 16-11, but fell narrowly to the second-ranked Notre Dame team, 15-12. Other wins of note on the men’s side included a 22-5 victory over 11th-ranked North Carolina and a 20-7 win over Wayne State.

The Ohio State women fell to both Penn State and Notre Dame by the same score, 17-10, but were winners over host Northwestern, 18-9, and eighth-ranked Temple, 17-10. The Buckeyes also posted shutouts against Lawrence and Detroit-Mercy, while surrendering only one point to Cleveland State.

The Junior Olympics await Ohio State Feb. 13-16, while collegiate action resumes for the Buckeyes Feb. 28 at the Midwest Conference Championship.
