COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State women’s tennis senior Erica Fisk (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) claimed the singles title at the ITA Collegiate Summer Circuit Midwest Region tournament at Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind., Tuesday. Fisk, a No. 5-8 seed, topped IU’s Linda Tran, seeded 1-4, in a third-set super-tiebreaker, for the title. The victory was one of three super-tiebreaker wins for Fisk in the tourney.
The ITA Collegiate Summer Circuit, in its 11th year, is made up of five regional circuits (East, Southeast, Midwest, Southwest and West) for collegiate players as well as the general public. Each region consists of four consecutive tournaments held during July.
With the win, Fisk claims a spot in the ITA National Summer Championships, the final tournament of the summer circuit. The tourney will be held in Bloomington, Ind., Aug. 9-13. The men’s and women’s singles and doubles champions will earn wild cards into the Icy Hot/ITA Men’s and Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships in October, the first national tournaments of the collegiate season.
Fisk went 5-0 in the 64-player tournament. She opened the tournament with straight-set victories over Christine Buretz of Connecticut (6-2, 6-2), Emory’s Stephanie Malak (6-0, 6-2) and Indiana’s Kara Zeder (6-3, 6-2). Fisk’s final three matches were close, as they all went to third-set super tiebreakers. Fisk topped Kristina Stastny of Notre Dame in the quarterfinals, 6-7, 6-3, 1-0 (7), followed by a win over IU’s Dora Vastag, 6-2, 1-6, 1-0 (11). In the final, Fisk triumphed over Tran, 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (5).
