Eight Buckeyes Placed in the Top Three at the Midwest Regional

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Today at the NCAA Midwest Regional, the Buckeyes competed against six other schools for a final chance to earn a 2019 championship bid. The Buckeyes had eight fencers place in the top three in their respective weapon categories.


Oliver Shindler earned second in today’s event with eight victories over his opponents and a +16 indicator. Jack Bradford walked away with eight wins and a +12 indicator, earning him bronze.

Alexanne Verret finished in third place with eight wins and a +16 indicator.


Nathan Wriedt and Leon Cao finished third and fourth respectively. Wriedt had 11 victories with a +24 indicator while Cao had 10 victories over his opponents with a +24 indicator.

Ohio State had three fencers place in the top five. Camilla Rivano earned silver with a total of 14 victories and a +42 indicator. Alexa Laskaris finished in fourth with 11 victories and a +29 indicator with teammate Gabriela Cecchini following close behind. Cecchini had 10 victories and a +23 indicator to take fifth place.


Domenik Koch had eight victories with a +23 indicator, just three touches shy of earning gold. Roscoe Swartz defeated seven opponents with a +16 indicator securing a third place finish. Benjamin Marcus finished fifth with seven victories and a +12 indicator.

Sarah Merza earned bronze with 10 wins against her opponents. She finished with a +27 indicator.


The Buckeyes will learn their fate on Tuesday, March 12, when selections for the national championships are announced. The 2019 NCAA Championships will be hosted by Cleveland State University on March 21-24.
