COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Behind two goals from Sammy Edwards, the No. 19 Ohio State women’s soccer team topped Maryland, 4-0, Thursday night in College Park, Md. With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 8-4-2, 2-2-2 in the Big Ten, while the Terrapins fall to 3-10-1, 1-5-0 in conference play.
“We focused on taking care of the ball, playing with patience and moving the ball well,” Lori Walker, Ohio State head coach, said. “We have the ability to dominate a game and the last three games we’ve done that. To score twice out of the gate was huge tonight. We were able to rest some people but also stay disciplined throughout the match and got the win.”
BUCKEYES WASTE NO TIME SCORING TWICE
In the second minute, Lindsay Agnew broke free down the left wing and was able to finish off a loose ball inside the six-yard box for her team-high ninth goal of the year and a 1-0 Buckeye lead.
Just over a minute later, a Nikki Walts corner kicked out to Emma Firenze at the top of the box, where the transfer placed a left-footed strike just inside the right post for her first goal in an Ohio State uniform to double the Buckeye advantage.
PRINCE WITH TWO CHANCES TO MAKE IT 3-0
In the 15th minute, Bridget Skinner played a beautiful through ball down the left wing to Nichelle Prince, who latched on to it but her shot from six yards toward the near post was saved by Maryland goalkeeper Katelyn Jensen.
In the 24th minute a cross was played into the box from the right wing and a failed Maryland clearance fell to the foot of Prince but her left-footed shot narrowly drifted over the crossbar as it remained a two-goal contest.
TERP FREE KICK ALMOST CUTS LEAD IN HALF
In the 31st minute, Kady Badham played a free kick in from just outside the right side of the box that deflected off a Buckeye and had to be cleared off the line by Sarah Roberts as the match head into the half at 2-0.
EDWARDS PUSHES LEAD TO 3-0
Just over 10 minutes into the second half, Agnew broke free down the right wing and played a cross on the ground through the box, where Sammy Edwards was waiting at the back post with the toe poke to make it a 3-0 game.
EDWARDS WITH HER SECOND THREE MINUTES LATER
In the 59th minute, Agnew played a ball from the far right wing to Edwards at the top of the box and Edwards played a low strike just inside the left post to push the lead to 4-0.
KAMMERDEINER WITH AN OPPORTUNITY
With just over 10 minutes remaining in the match Meghan Kammerdeiner tracked down a long ball on the left wing but Maryland substitute goalkeeper Rachel Egyed came out from goal to make the stop on the one-on-one opportunity as the match ended 4-0 in favor of the Buckeyes.
