After entering the starting lineup for the second game of the 2016 season as a red-shirt freshman, Jones rarely left the field over the next three seasons. He played in 39 games as a Buckeye and started 37 times, including all 14 games for the 2018 Big Ten and Roses Bowl champions and 11 times for the 2017 Big Ten and Cotton Bowl champions. Jones is one of three freshmen defensive linemen – the others are Dan Wilkinson (10 starts in 1992) and Luke Fickell (12 starts in 1993) – to start 10 or more games during a freshman season. Jones started 12 in 2016.

Off the field, Jones spent a week in the summer of 2018 in Manchester, N.H., interning with the Drug Enforcement Administration.
