COLUMBUS, Ohio-Dr. Christopher Kaeding, executive director of sports medicine at Ohio State University, announced Thursday organizational changes to the care providers assigned to the Ohio State Department of Athletics.

Dr. James Borchers will now serve as the head team physician for the department of athletics.

“Borchers has been a team physician for the Buckeyes for 12 years and we are excited for him to be in his new role,” Kaeding said. “We feel we have an exceptional multi-disciplinary team of medical professionals caring for our student-athletes.”

With more than a dozen years serving Ohio State Athletics, Borchers is excited about his new role.

“I am extremely honored and appreciative for the opportunity to be named the head team physician and director of medical services for the Ohio State University Athletics Department,” Borchers said. “I am looking forward to working with the outstanding athletic training staff, team physicians and other medical personnel in providing the best health care and medical services for our student-athletes.”

Borchers will be charged with overseeing the team physicians, coordinating the medical services provided to Ohio State’s student-athletes and implementing the policies and procedures developed by the Ohio State Sports Medicine Administrative Group – currently composed of Janine Oman (senior associate athletics director for student services and sport administration), Doug Calland (associate athletics director for sport performance), Borchers and Kaeding.

Borchers will report to the executive director of sports medicine and continue to serve on the Sports Medicine Administrative Group as well as in his leadership roles in the Sports Medicine Center and Department of Family Medicine.
