COLUMBUS, Ohio – Francesca Di Lorenzo, a sophomore on the Ohio State women’s tennis team, is the No. 1 seed and defending champion of the 2016 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, which runs Thursday through Sunday at the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
Di Lorenzo, who was ranked third to start the fall, will take on Claudia Herrero of Nevada, the ITA Mountain Region champion, in the first round at 10:45 a.m. Thursday. Two rounds of singles are scheduled for Friday, with the semifinals Saturday and the championship Sunday.
The singles draw includes 32 players. If an American wins or reaches the final this weekend, she will automatically earn a wild card into a future USTA Pro Circuit tournament. American singles champions will also automatically earn a place on the 2017 USTA Collegiate National Team.
Di Lorenzo won the ITA’s first national championship of the season, claiming the Riviera/ITA All-American title last month, losing just one set in her five wins en route to the title. The championship secured Di Lorenzo’s berth in the National Indoors Championship.
The New Albany native capture the first ITA national title in Ohio State women’s tennis history last fall when she won the 2015 National Indoors Championship. In the tournament, Di Lorenzo, who was rated the top newcomer in collegiate tennis, downed three seeded players, beating the No. 8 seed in the semifinals, the No. 3 seed in the Round of 16 and the No. 6 seed (the defending NIIC champion) in the quarterfinals. She dropped just one set in her five matches combined.
