COLUMBUS, Ohio – Gabriella De Santis and Sandy Niehaus, members of the Ohio State women’s tennis team, notched back-to-back victories Wednesday to clinch a spot in the main draw of the 2014 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, California. The Buckeyes tabbed a tiebreaker victory vs. Oklahoma State before topping Virginia’s Julia Elbaba and Stephanie Nauta in straight sets to move on to the main draw of the doubles championship.

The Buckeye sophomore duo is slated to face Utah State’s McKenzie Davis and Kallie Sperry in the first round at 2 p.m. PT Thursday. De Santis and Niehaus are the first doubles team to represent Ohio State in the doubles main draw of the All-American Championships since Monica Rincon and Erica Fisk in the 2001 edition of the event.

After dropping the first set to Oklahoma State’s Katrina Adamovic and Vladica Babic, 2-6, in their first match of the afternoon, the Buckeye tandem battled back to win the second, 6-4, and force a tiebreaker in lieu of a third set. Ranked as the No. 7 seed in the qualifier, De Santis and Niehaus captured the second-round match with a 10-6 tiebreaker win.

The pair continued the momentum, defeating No. 4 seed Elbaba and Nauta in straight sets, 7-6 (6), 6-2, to claim the victory and their spot in the main draw of the tournament.

Ranked as the No. 32 doubles pair in the country, De Santis and Niehaus have now won 17-consecutive doubles matches.
