COLUMBUS, Ohio – Gabriella De Santis and Sandy Niehaus, sophomores on the Ohio State women’s tennis team, captured the 2014 ITA Midwest Summer Circuit doubles championship Monday in West Lafayette, Indiana. The top-seeded Buckeye duo, who rank 63rd in the final 2014 ITA poll, defeated Nell Boyd from Drake University and Nelle Youel from North Illinois, 8-4, at the Schwartz Tennis Center to earn the program’s first ITA Midwest Summer Circuit doubles title.
De Santis, who was named the B1G Freshman of the Year and ITA Midwest Rookie of the Year, and Niehaus, a second-team All-Big Ten selection, led the squad with 19 doubles wins in their freshman season. The pair closed out the spring campaign with 14-consecutive wins, including a perfect 7-0 record in B1G outings. The Buckeyes collected 19 team wins last season, the second-most wins in program history, finishing third in the B1G standings en route to an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.
Sophomore Grainne O’Neill and freshman Anna Sanford were also in action at the tournament, advancing to the semifinals of the tournament before falling to runner-ups Boyd and Youel, 8-4.
