May 15, 2017

STANFORD, Calif. – The Ohio State University men’s golf team sat even par through Monday’s first nine holes before coming in at 8-over (288) by Round One’s conclusion. Entering Day Two, the Buckeyes are next to North Carolina (also 8-over) in ninth place with the best five teams advancing to the NCAA Championships. Ohio State and the Tar Heels are both eight shots back from the top-five cut-off with 36 holes to play.

Complete Results/Live Scoring

Sophomore Will Grimmer set the tone immediately by burying a birdie on the opening hole. Despite a bogey on the subsequent hole, he made the turn at 1-under and remained there until the final green saw a bogey to return him to even par. Grimmer’s team-leading 70 is good for a share of 17th place overall in the 75-player competition.

Fellow Cincinnatian sophomore Daniel Wetterch is close behind, tied for 27th place and a lone stroke back at 1-over (71). He was excellent on the Par 5’s, dipping four strokes under par to post the tournament’s best Par-5 scoring rate. In fact, Wetterich went birdie-eagle-birdie on the course’s trio of Par 5’s, dropping in his eagle on Hole 1 — the toughest rated Par 5 of the day. Nine eagles were tallied in total on Monday, but only two of which came on Hole 1.

Jeg Coughlin III and Clark Engle contributed to the team score as well, registering respective rounds of 73 and 74. Coughlin III was 1-over making his way to the first tee after starting on Hole 10 while Engle sat 2-over. Both were +2 on the ‘Front 9’ to wrap up the afternoon tied for 41st and 47th place.

Caleb Ramirez scorched the ‘Back 9’ with two birdies surrounded by seven pars. He then dropped in another birdie on Hole 1, falling to 3-under before a double bogey on the second ignited a stretch of six straight holes over par.

Three different Buckeyes recorded 13 or more pars, leading to a team total of 58 which ranked second in the field. Ohio State struggled in the birdie department, however, ranking second-to-last with nine birdies.
