COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State’s First Varsity Four finished third in its semifinal race Saturday to advance to the Grand Finals Sunday in the 2022 NCAA Rowing Championships in Sarasota, Florida. The First and Second Varsity Eight boats moved on to the Petite Finals.
Grand Final races are for spots 1-6 nationally while the boats in the Petite Finals will battle for spots 7-12.
In the First Varsity Eight semifinals, at 500 meters Texas took the lead with Brown close behind. California and the Buckeyes were battling for third at 750 meters. California led Ohio State at 1,500 meters and held on to take the third spot by less than a half second, sending the Buckeyes to the Petite Final.
Ohio State’s 1V8 Petite Final is scheduled for 10:12 a.m. Sunday vs. Virginia, Penn, Yale, Michigan, and SMU.
Top three boats from each semifinal moved on to the Grand Finals (A Finals) with the remaining three to the Petite Finals (B Final) Sunday.
Racing was delayed with lightning in the Sarasota area for about an hour after the first 2V8 semifinal of the day.
In Ohio State’s 2V8 semifinal, Yale, Stanford and Virginia were in the lead at 500 meters. The Buckeyes battled Michigan and SMU for the No. 4 spot. Ohio State moved on to the Petite Final Sunday along with the Mustangs and Wolverines.
The Buckeyes will race at 9:46 a.m. Sunday in the 2V8 Petite Final to determine spots 7-12.
In the final Division I semifinal of the day, Ohio State’s 1V4 was in a battle over the first 500 meters as Stanford and Princeton took the early lead. The Buckeyes were third after 1,000 meters with a boat-length lead over No. 4 Yale. Stanford crossed first ahead of Princeton and Ohio State, the three boats that advance to the Grand Finals Sunday from the last 1V4 semifinal.
The Buckeyes will race for the 1V4 championship at 9:34 a.m. Sunday in the Grand Finals against Stanford, Princeton, Washington, Texas and Brown
Ohio State advanced all three if its boats to the Saturday semifinals with the 1V8 and 1V4 finishing among the Top 2 in the Friday morning heats and the 2V8 battling back to win its Friday afternoon repechage.
The Buckeyes opened the 2022 NCAA Championships with a second-place finish in Heat 3 of the 1V8 competition. The effort earned the Buckeyes a spot in the Saturday semifinals at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Florida.
Ohio State’s 1V4 also moved on to the Saturday semifinals with a second-place effort in its heat. The 2V8 finished third in its heat Friday morning. The 2V8 managed to advance by winning its afternoon repechage race.
In the 1V8 competition Friday, Stanford jumped to the lead ahead of the Buckeyes by about a half-boat length at 500 meters. The Cardinal extended the lead at 1,000 meters but the Buckeyes held a comfortable second-place position. Stanford won the heat with Ohio State coming in second. The Cardinal finished with a time of 6:11.674 with the Buckeyes crossing the line at 6:16.675.
The top two boats from each morning heat moved on to the semifinals Saturday. the remaining boats competed in Friday afternoon repechage races for a chance to advance to the semifinals.
In the 2V8 competition, Yale jumped out to a boat-length lead at 500 meters over the Buckeyes. Ohio State was in third at 1,000 meters behind Yale and California. The Buckeyes finished the race third and raced again Friday afternoon in the second 2V8 repechage.
In the afternoon 2V8 repechage, Brown jumped to a lead of less than a second at 1,000 meters over the Buckeyes with Duke in third. Ohio State remained within striking distance before taking a boat-length lead at 1,500 meters. The Buckeyes held on to win, with Brown second, to advance to the AB semifinals Saturday.
In the 1V4 competition Friday, Washington owned the early lead over the Buckeyes at 500 meters with each team building a sizeable lead over the field. At 1,000 meters, the Huskies built a boat-length lead over the Buckeyes, who had an equally-sized lead over SMU. Washington won the heat with the Buckeyes finishing second. Both advanced to the semifinals Saturday.
The Ohio State rowing team is making its 22nd appearance at the NCAA Championships.
Ohio State’s 1V4 is seeded No. 4, the 1V8 is the No. 6 seed and the 2V8 boat is seeded No. 10.
The Buckeyes are one of 22 teams competing at the championships. Each school fields two eight boats and one four boat for the championship event.
BUCKEYES IN THE NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
Ohio State has competed in each NCAA regatta held since 2000 (22 total). The Buckeyes own seven individual boat titles and has finished in the Top 10 a total of 20 times.
The Buckeyes won NCAA national titles in 2013, 2014 and 2015. The team finished second in 2016 and owns one third (2007) and two fourth-place (2001, 2005) finishes. Ohio State placed sixth in 2021.
The 2022 NCAA Championships are the second for Kate Sweeney as head coach of the Buckeyes. She guided Ohio State to a sixth-place finish a season ago. Click HERE for the 2021 NCAA Championship results.
2022 B1G WRAPUP
The Buckeyes won the 2022 Big Ten Championships with a total of 184 points. Ohio State crossed the finish line first in the first novice eight, second varsity four, first varsity four and first varsity eight races while earning second place in the second novice eight, third varsity four and second varsity eight contests. Several Buckeyes earned Big Ten recognition following the championship regatta. Sisters Anneta and Maria Kyridou along with Lexie Nothdurft were named 2022 First Team All-Big Ten. Alessandra Montesano and Rachel DeWitte earned second team honors. Leandra Hogrefe was selected as Ohio State’s Sportsmanship Award honoree.
Sweeney, now in her third season as head coach of the Buckeyes, was named the 2022 Big Ten Coach of the Year. Anneta Kyridou was named the conference Freshman of the Year.
