COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State men’s hockey center Dave Steckel (Fr., West Bend, Wis.) earned Central Collegiate Hockey Association Rookie of the Week honors for the week ending Jan. 21, the conference announced.
It is the second time Steckel has earned rookie of the week accolades and the fifth honor overall claimed by the Buckeyes this season.
In two games against Notre Dame, Steckel posted four points, on two goal and two assists. In the Buckeyes’ 5-2 win Jan. 19, Steckel recorded the second three point-game of his career. He scored two goals in the contest, including clinching the win for the Buckeyes with an unassisted goal with 46 seconds remaining in the game. He also added an assist in the game. He posted an assist in Ohio State’s tie (2-2) with the Irish in the second game.
Steckel helped Ohio State convert two-of-eight power-play opportunities on the weekend, scoring a power-play goal in the first game and assisting on one in the second. He also was a member of the Buckeyes’ penalty-killing unit that held the Irish to one goal in nine chances.
With points in both games over the weekend, Steckel extended his team-best scoring streak to 14 games. He has been held scoreless just four times in 20 games this season. Steckel leads the Buckeyes with 12 goals and is second in scoring with 25 points.
After a week off, the Buckeyes (12-10-2, 9-7-2 CCHA) next play Friday and Saturday, Feb. 2-3, when they play host to Notre Dame in Value City Arena.
