BERKELEY, Calif. — Senior Cian Dabrowski scored the game-winning goal 30 seconds into overtime to give the No. 16 Buckeyes a 16-15 victory at host California Friday afternoon in Berkeley, Calif.
The win moves the Buckeyes to 2-0 on the young season before crossing the bay to face No. 14 Stanford at Noon/3 p.m. ET in Palo Alto Sunday. Cal drops to 0-1 on the season.
Dabrowski scored four goals on the day while senior Rainey Hodgson added four goals of her own and two assists. Sophomore Molly Woody had another solid all-around game with two goals, two assists and was dominant on the draw controls with a career-high 13, including the one in overtime to gain possession and seal the win. Classmate Lauren Sherry also added two goals.
Ohio State led by six, 13-7, with 18:44 left on Morgan Fee’s unassisted goal. From that point, Cal would close the half on an 8-2 run to force overtime. With the Buckeyes leading 14-13 with under 5 minutes remaining, Hodgson scored an all-important goal to give Ohio State a two-goal cushion with 3:31 left.
But Cal struck back with back-to-back goals to end the half from Bella Huther and Meredith Haggerty to tie the score. Ohio State had a couple chances at the end of regulation, but two great shots by the Buckeyes, including a diving shot by Dabrowski, couldn’t find the back of the net.
The Buckeyes scored the first four goals of the game and eventually led 9-6 at the half after both teams seemingly traded goals from that point. Ohio State then scored four of the first five goals of the second half, setting up the dramatic final 10 minutes.
The Buckeyes won the draw control battle, 21-13, due in large part to Wood. Christine Easton also chipped in with four. Ohio State took 33 shots on the day, 27 of those on target (11 saves, 16 goals).
Huther led Cal with five goals, Chole Landry four and Haggerty three.
