COLUMBUS, Ohio – Freshman Katarzyna Dabrowa highlighted the Ohio State fencing team’s trip to University Park, Pa., for the 39th Annual Garret Open Nov. 13-14, earning gold in women’s epee a month after tying for third at the Cincinnati, Ohio, North American Cup event. Ohio State faced NCAA Tournament-caliber competition at the event, including fencers from Harvard, Northwestern, Princeton, Notre Dame and defending national champion and host Penn State.

The Buckeye women finished with a trio of medalists, including Dabrowa. Sophomore Alison Miller fell one spot short of earning a top-place finish of her own in women’s sabre as she took second to Harvard’s Caroline Volka and senior Oksana Dmytruk placed third in women’s foil behind a pair of Ivy League opponents from Harvard and Princeton.

Eric Gurnowski and Igor Tolkachev were the top finishers for the men, placing fifth and sixth in epee. Marco Canevari joined his teammates with a ninth-place finish in the same category.

Zain Shaito managed a Top 10 finish, finishing ninth in men’s foil. Nicholas Kotz provided the best performance for the Buckeyes in men’s sabre, taking 13th.

Ohio State won’t compete as a team again until Jan. 22 at the NYU Invitational, followed by the St. John’s Duals Jan. 23. Individual members of the team will compete in the Junior North American Cup in Milwaukee, Wis., Nov. 19-22 and the Dallas, Texas, North American Cup Jan. 14-27.
