William Becker


position Assistant Coach

William Becker is in his first season as an assistant coach for the Buckeyes. However, he has been involved in fencing since 1982 and has been coaching since 1991. In 2018, he was named United States Fencing Coaches’ Association’s 2018 Coach of the Year.

For the past 11 years, William Becker created and built the tremendously successful Fencers Club of Arizona. He has coached numerous students to national and world championship teams, earning countless national, international and world championship medals. Many of the students have gone on to compete for NCAA collegiate teams around the country.

Becker is currently an international referee with licenses in sabre and foil. Having refereed numerous zonal and world championship finals, he continues to represent the USA in this capacity.

As a fencer, he has seen a high level of success as well with medals in all weapons at numerous national events and championships. He has also had the esteemed opportunity to represent the USA as a member of the veteran’s world team at the Veteran’s World Championships in 2015, 2016, and 2018 where he competed both individually and as a member of the sabre team. As a competitor at these competitions, he won a gold medal, silver medal, and two bronze medals.

Coach Becker is a graduate of the University of South Florida with a master’s degree in Physical Education. He also received his Maitre’d Sabre from the United States Fencing Coaches’ Association. He has served as a member of the USA Fencing Referee Commission, as the Florida Gold Coast Division Chair, Arizona Division Chair, Southeast Section Chair, and he served over 20 years on USA Fencing’s Board of Directors.
