position Cheerleading Head Coach
Alma Mater Ohio State, 2007
Ben Schreiber was hired as the head coach of The Ohio State University spirit squad in April. Schreiber, who cheered for the Buckeyes from 2004-07, comes to Ohio State after spending the past five years as head cheerleading coach and fitness coordinator at the University of Delaware, where he led the Blue Hens to the 2014 UCA Division I Large Coed National Championship, along with second-place finishes in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013.
“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to return to my alma mater and be at the helm of the spirit program, specifically as the head cheerleading coach,” Schreiber said. “I look forward to working with each student-athlete and helping them achieve their goals and dreams as I am blessed to live out my own. My desire is to continue to build on the traditions of the program and develop new, cutting-edge concepts to help distinguish this program from others.”
In the fall of 2011, his position at Delaware changed to spirit coordinator, overseeing the cheer and dance programs along with several other marketing responsibilities for the department of athletics and recreation services. As head coach, Schreiber added an all-girl team in the fall of 2011, expanding the cheerleading program to two teams.
“Ben has all the qualities we were looking for in our next head coach,” said Martin Jarmond, Ohio State executive associate athletics director and administrator for the spirit program. “His experience and success as a head coach and his passion for Ohio State and developing student-athletes holistically make him a perfect fit to lead our spirit program.”
After arriving at Delaware in 2007, Schreiber served as a graduate assistant for the UD fitness programs and with the cheerleading team. As a cheerleader, he helped lead UD to two second-place finishes at the UCA College National Cheerleading Championships and in 2008 placed first out of 42 couples in the UCA College Partner Stunt qualification.
In the spring of 2010, Schreiber was a member of the 2010 USA Coed National Cheerleading team that successfully won the 2010 International Cheer Union (ICU) World Cheerleading Championships. In 2011, he and assistant coach Gillian Guadagnino placed second in the NCA Collegiate Open Partner Stunt National Championship. Schreiber attended Delta State University in Cleveland, Miss., from 2002-03 before transferring to Ohio State where he became the first Buckeye cheerleader to qualify and compete in the UCA College National Partner Student competition, where he placed ninth. He continued his interests in fitness and athletics during his senior year in 2007 by completing an internship with the Ohio State strength and conditioning department.
A native of Broadview Heights, Ohio, Schreiber earned his bachelor[apos]s degree in sports humanities from Ohio State in 2007 and received his master’s degree in higher education administration from the University of Delaware in 2011.
