QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH JARRED MARTIN
“I’m really proud of this team, not only for their ability to win today against a very dangerous Rutgers team, but just the mentality they have carried all season. We controlled play for extended periods of time and I thought we were able to generate some shots and penalty corners. Credit to Rutgers defense and their goalkeeper, they played very well today and kept us off the board. We really had to fight for opportunities.”
“As the overtime periods went on, I could see us simplify some attack and we looked to strike at better moments when we had created advantages. What a great finish, what a great moment for this team to celebrate. This game just showcased just how tough the Big Ten conference is. We worked together through the various phases of the game and kept sustaining team play on both sides of the ball. I couldn’t be prouder for the team. They have worked very hard and earned this win. We will enjoy today and are looking forward to heading up to Northwestern next weekend.”
It took 89 minutes for the only goal of the game to be scored. With under two minutes to play in the second overtime period, Kelsey Nolan brought the ball into the circle, passed the ball off to Esther Clotet, and Clotet pushed the ball past the Rutgers goalkeeper to secure the win for the Buckeyes.
The Buckeyes will face No. 2 Maryland at Northwestern next Friday (1 p.m.) in the semifinals of the 2018 Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament. The winner will advance to play in the final game on Sunday (3:30 p.m.).
