COLUMBUS, Ohio – Chris Hegngi, a four-year letterwinner on the Ohio State men’s soccer team, was selected in the 2013 Major League Soccer (MLS) Supplemental Draft held Tuesday from the league’s offices in New York. Hegngi, the 2011 Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year, was taken by the Portland Timbers, with the third pick of the second round.
A two-time All-Big Ten selection, Hegngi was a four-year starter at Ohio State. He played in all 79 career games, making 77 starts, and had 18 goals and 11 assists to his credit. He was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year as a junior in 2011 after leading the Buckeyes and the conference in scoring with nine goals in 19 games. Hegngi’s career goals and points totals are in the Top 10 all-time at Ohio State, while his shots are second in program history.
From Silver Spring, Md.,Hegngi is the 15th Buckeye player to be taken in the Major League Soccer draft since 2003, all under head coach John Bluem. There currently are two former Buckeyes active in the MLS: Eric Brunner (Houston) and Matt Lampson (Columbus). Roger Espinoza left Sporting KC in the offseason after signing a contract with the English Premier League club Wigan Athletic.
