The Spirit Program will host a preview performance of their nationals routines this Friday, January 11th at St. John Arena. Admission is free and the performances will kick off at 7:00 p.m.
The team will travel to Florida next week to compete at the annual UDA and UCA College National Championship at ESPN Wide World of Sports. The three teams, dance, cheer, and mascot, have all represented Ohio State at the highest level of competition for their sports and have experienced much success.
The dance team will participate in the competitive D1A Pom and Jazz divisions. The contingent of dancers is led by Head Coach Melissa McGhee and Assistant Coaches Patrick Carmichael and Lauren Burns. Saturday hosts the semi-finals performance, where teams receive rankings in their respective categories and learn if they qualify to compete in the finals competition on Sunday. Last year, the Buckeye dancers were crowned double national champions, winning the Pom and Jazz division for the first time in school history. The University of Minnesota followed the Buckeyes in both categories, and Rutgers and Florida State followed in the Pom and Jazz categories, respectively. After competing a home routine at UDA College Camp in Wisconsin this summer and receiving first place distinction among fierce competitors, the program has the momentum it needs to build a tradition of success.
Ohio State’s cheerleading team, led by Head Coach Ben Schreiber and Assistant Coach Siobhan St. John, will go through a similar journey next weekend in Orlando. The Buckeyes were awarded third place in a difficult D1A Co-ed divison last year at UCA Nationals just behind the University of Kentucky and UCF, and are are looking to build upon their accomplishments. Sixteen athletes will take the blue mat wearing the Block O and representing the Scarlet and Gray!
Brutus Buckeye, coached by Ray Sharp and Assistant Coach Tim Thiel, undergoes a unique process to qualify to perform at nationals, submitting a mascot entry tape towards the beginning of the season. Rankings are then awarded to mascots before competition begins in Florida. This year Brutus Buckeye will enter the competition ranked first among all D1A mascots! Brutus brought home the first place title last in 2015 and received third place distinction last year behind Goldy the Gopher and Aubbie the Tiger.
