COLUMBUS, Ohio – Chase Buchanan, a sophomore on the No. 2 Ohio State men’s tennis team (20-1; 4-0 Big Ten), was named Big Ten Athlete of the Week for the fifth time this season the conference announced Tuesday.
The Buckeyes have now earned nine Big Ten weekly laurels this season. Buchanan, a native of New Albany, Ohio, previously was honored Feb. 2, Feb. 23, March 9 and March 16.
Ranked 12th in the nation, Buchanan posted a 4-0 record, including a 3-0 mark at No. 1 singles and doubles April 2 and April 4 vs. conference opponents Iowa and Minnesota. He is now 18-4 on the season with a 14-1 mark in duals.
Against the Hawkeyes, Buchanan clinched the 6-1 Buckeye win after downing Marc Bruche in straight sets 6-4, 6-2. As the 34th-ranked pair in the nation, Buchanan paired with freshman Dino Marcan and beat Tom Mroziewicz and Bruche, 8-5, to lift the Scarlet and Gray to an early 1-0 lead.
Two days later against the Gophers, Buchanan and Marcan picked up their seventh straight win at No. 1 when they upset No. 27 Sebastian Gallego and Phillip Arndt, 8-4, en route to a 7-0 shutout by Ohio State. It was the second win over a Top 30 opponent for the Buckeye duo. In singles, Buchanan continued his dominance at the top of the singles lineup as he won his team-high ninth match against a nationally ranked opponent following his 6-4, 6-1 victory over No. 66 Gallego.
