COLUMBUS, Ohio – Buckeye fencers Gabriela Cecchini of Brazil and Julieta Toledo of Mexico competed in World Cup tournaments in their home-country colors this weekend. Cecchini finished 141st of 205 foil fencers and Toledo finished 29th of 185 sabre fencers.
Cecchini, the Buckeyes’ senior foil captain, traveled to Saint-Maur, France, for the individual Senior Women’s Foil World Cup. The Brazil native put up two wins in a tough pool, where three of her six opponents went on to place in the Top 60. Her two wins earned her the No. 120 seed of the 189 who advanced. She dropped in the preliminary elimination round to Maeva Rancurle of France who went on to place 73rd. Cecchini finished in 141st place of 205 seasoned foil fencers from around the world.
Freshman Julieta Toledo of Mexico competed in the Senior Women’s Sabre World Cup in Salt Lake City,Utah. She marked five wins in the pool competition, dropping only one bout, making her the No. 16 seed going into preliminary elimination bouts. After getting a bye in the first round, she met world ranked No. 28 Joilen Corteyn of Belgium. Toledo earned 15 touches against Corteyn to advance to the round of 64 elimination bouts. Toledo put up 15 touches against Norika Tamura of Japan, moving to the round of 32 where she lost 15-7 to a strong French opponent. Toledo’s performance earned her 29th place of 185 decorated sabre fencers.
