COLUMBUS, Ohio – Rookie Niki Carver earned her second weekly accolade of the season after being selected as the Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Monday.
Carver’s big weekend at the plate propelled the Buckeyes to six straight wins as she batted .625 with five hits, four runs, two RBI, a double, triple, home run and 1.375 slugging percentage against Maryland. The Gainesville, Ga. native is on a six-game hitting streak, the longest of her career.
When the two teams opened the series on Friday, she connected on a two-run shot in the bottom of the second and a leadoff triple in the sixth to help the Buckeyes to a season-high 13 runs, 13 RBI and 14 hits. Carver was perfect 2-for-2 with two runs and a double on Saturday and had single in Sunday’s finale.
Carver has a .409 batting average through 19 Big Ten contests, which ranks eighth in the conference. Her .733 slugging percentage checks in seventh while she also has 18 hits, 12 runs and six RBI in league outings. She is part of an offense that stands second in conference play in home runs (27) and third in slugging percentage (.544). Ohio State is also fourth in on-base percentage (.397), runs scored (122), hits (152) and runs batted in (107).
