PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – Ohio State freshman Liz Caputo homered twice, including a grand slam and a three-run home run, and finished with seven RBI to lead the Buckeye softball team (5-5) to an 11-2 win over Long Island (0-6) Sunday as the Palm Springs Classic concluded at Big League Dreams Sports Complex in Palm Springs, Calif.
Caputo ((Riverside, Calif./Riverside Poly) is the first Buckeye to hit a grand slam since sophomore Jamee Juarez (La Puente, Calif./Wilson) did so on her birthday last season as a freshman to beat then-No. 24 Arizona State, 6-0.
Sunday against Long Island, Juarez struck out three LIU hitters on her way to notching the five-inning victory.
Ohio State exploded for five runs in the second inning as sophomore Christina Douglas (Mesa, Ariz./Dobson) led off with a solo home run, junior Billie Jo Carder (Celina, Ohio/Celina) knocked an RBI double and Caputo nailed a three-run homer, her first round-tripper as a Buckeye and first of the game. She would add a grand slam in the fifth inning with two outs to give OSU its final margin of victory.
An inning after Caputo’s first home run, junior Chelsea Baker (Gahanna, Ohio/DeSales) smacked a two-run single to put the Buckeyes up, 7-0. Long Island’s Briana Mathiesen would answer in the fourth inning with a two-run homer, her third of the weekend, but it would account for all the Blackbirds’ runs in the contest.
OSU senior Ashley Cutcliff (Zionsville, Ind./U. of Florida) was 3-for-3 to notch her sixth career three-hit game. Douglas finished the game 2-for-3.
Ohio State will return to action next weekend at the Georgia Tech Buzz Classic in Atlanta, Ga.
