COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State freshman outfielder Dominic Canzone garnered third team All-Big Ten honors, the conference office announced Tuesday. In addition, Canzone, a native of Sagamore Hills, Ohio, was named to the All-Freshman list. Senior infielder Jalen Washington was named the Buckeyes’ sportsmanship award nominee.
Canzone started in right field in 39 games and had 49 appearances, becoming the team’s top hitter in 2017. He led the Scarlet and Gray with a. 343 average, which ranks fifth overall in the league. Canzone collected 22 runs scored, 57 hits, four doubles, three triples, three home runs, 36 RBI, 15 walks and went 13-for-15 in stolen bases. He was one of the top hitters in the league in conference games. Canzone ranked third in batting average (.386), fourth in RBI (24), seventh in on-base percentage (.432) and stolen bases (7) as well as tenth in slugging percentage (.566). In right field, Canzone did not commit an error with 85 putouts and a team-high seven assists. Canzone was one of four freshmen named unanimous decisions on the rookie list.
Washington, from Twinsburg, Ohio, was a two-time captain and named a Senior CLASS Award candidate this past spring. He transitioned from the team’s starting catcher to shortstop, leading the Buckeyes in doubles (14), triples (5), home runs (7), RBI (38) and stolen bases (14). He hit a home run in his final at-bat as a Buckeye last Saturday on Senior Day.
