COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State’s Cannon Kingsley was named the ITA Midwest Region Rookie of the Year on Monday as announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. He is now a candidate for the National Rookie of the Year which will be announced next Monday, May 25th during a special virtual awards ceremony. Kingsley is the eighth Buckeye to garner the award and the fifth in the last six years, joining Mikael Torpegaard (2015), Martin Joyce (2016), JJ Wolf (2017) and John McNally (2018).
The Northport, N.Y., native made an immediate impact, winning the consolation bracket at the ITA All-American Championship in his first collegiate event. He won five matches in the run, all over ranked opponents. At the ITA Fall Championship, he advanced to the round of 16 and then was the only freshman invited to the USTA Winter Wild Card Playoff.
During the team portion of the season, Kingsley had an impressive 22-1 combined record, going 12-1 in singles matches and a perfect 10-0 in doubles matches. He avenged one of his losses from the fall by beating then No. 1 Daniel Cukierman 6-4, 6-2 in the Buckeye’s win over No. 1 Southern Cal. At the end of the shortened season, he went on the road and defeated No. 7 Alexandre Rotsaert of Stanford 7-5, 6-4. For the year, Kingsley had nine wins over ranked singles opponents including those two over top-10 players.
He spent the entire season ranked in the top-25 and finished the year ranked No. 14.
