COLUMBUS, Ohio – On the fifth day of competition at the ITA Midwest Regional, Miho Kowase, a sophomore on the Ohio State women’s tennis team, fell in the singles quarterfinals Monday afternoon at the Atkins Tennis Center in Urbana, Illinois. The loss marks the end of the run for the Buckeyes at the tournament hosted by Illinois.
Kowase, ranked No. 124 in the ITA preseason poll, fell to Michigan’s No. 11-ranked Emina Bektas, who captured the doubles championship earlier in the morning, in straight sets. After falling in the first set, Kowase battled to force a second-set tiebreaker at 6-all. Kowase dropped the tiebreaker, 7-4.
The Scarlet and Gray advanced two teams to the doubles quarterfinals. Michigan, Notre Dame and Ohio State were the only schools with more than one doubles team in the quarterfinals. With six Buckeyes competing in the singles main draw, including Grainne O’Neill who earned a spot from the singles qualifiers, the squad totaled five wins and advanced three players to the round of 16 with Kowase moving on the quarterfinals.
Up next, the Buckeyes will compete in the Tennessee Fall Invite in Knoxville, Tennessee, October 31-November 1.
