COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State wrestling will be well represented at the 2022 World Team Trials this week (May 21-22) at the Xtream Arena in Coralville, Iowa.
Current Buckeyes Sammy Sasso, Tate Orndorff, Brady and Dylan Koontz and Nick Boykin are all set to compete.
Jesse Mendez, who will join the Ohio State roster in 2022-23, also will be competing.
Former Buckeyes Fritz Schierl, Kollin Moore, Luke Pletcher and Joey McKenna also will be in the mix.
In the freestyle competition, Sasso is the No. 7 seed in the 70kg bracket. Mendez is the No. 4 seed at 61kg. Moore is the No. 2 seed at 97kg and McKenna is the No. 3 seeded 65kg wrestler. Pletcher is the No. 7 seed at 65kg.
In Greco-Roman, Orndorff is the No. 4 seed at 130kg, Brady Koontz is the No. 2 seed at 55kg while his brother Dylan is the No. 3 seed at 60kg.
Schierl, who exhausted his Ohio State eligibility last season, is the No. 8 seed at 77kg. Boykin is the top seed at 97kg.
The World Team Trials Challenge Tournament features top Olympic hopefuls in the three Olympic disciplines: men’s freestyle, women’s freestyle and Greco-Roman.
Winners and some of the runners-up will advance to Final X Stillwater on June 3 or Final X New York on June 8. Final X is the last step in the Senior World Team Trials process. which will determine the 2022 U.S. Senior World Team that will compete in Belgrade, Serbia, Sept. 12-18.
