COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s hockey team proved as unwelcoming to the visiting Michigan Wolverines (13-4-2/10-2-1) as the winter storm blanketing Columbus, as the Buckeyes notched a 1-0 win to christen Value City Arena.
Chris Richards (Sr., Cornwall, Ont.) scored the lone goal of the contest on the power-play in the third period.
Neither team was able to connect for a goal through the first two periods, though Ohio State (10-8-2/9-4-2) outshot Michigan 30-21 overall. The Wolverines, however, were unable to convert on the power play and went 0-6, while Richards’ goal made the Buckeyes 1-6 on the power-play on the night.
After a penalty whistled on Michigan’s Mike Comrie (Fr., Edmonton, Alb.) midway through the third period, Ohio State was able to connect. Richards took a feed from teammates Andre Signoretti (So., Manotick, Ont.) and Hugo Boisvert (Jr., St. Eustache, Que.) at 13:51 to send the puck home above the outstretched hand of Wolverine goaltender Josh Blackburn (Fr. Choctaw, Okla.). Michigan was unable to score the equalizer, even after pulling Blackburn in favor of an increased offensive attack from six players on the ice.
Blackburn finished the night with 29 total saves, while Ohio State’s Jeff Maund (So., Mississauga, Ont.) was perfect, logging 21 saves.
Paid attendance for the game was 17, 045, a sellout in the new arena, the largest in college hockey.
Ohio State has now won nine of its last 11 games and will face Lake Superior Thursday at 7 p.m.
