COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State placed a conference-high 74 student-athletes representing 28 sports on the 2013 Big Ten Distinguished Scholars list, released Wednesday by the Big Ten Conference. Student-athletes on the list must be letterwinners in at least their second year at their school and earn a minimum grade-point average of 3.7 or higher for the previous academic year. A total of 637 Big Ten athletes from 38 sports were recognized.

The Buckeyes women’s swimming and diving program led the way with eight honorees, followed by field hockey, men’s volleyball and men’s swimming and diving with five apiece. Nine Buckeyes posted perfect 4.0 grade-point averages over the year – Derek Blevins (track & field), Aaron Craft (basketball), Adam Homan (football), Randy Languis (wrestling), Michael Newberger (gymnastics), Melissa Rennie (softball), Max Stearns (fencing), Gavin Trebilcock (swimming & diving) and Tim Wetzel (baseball).

Craft, the 2013 Academic All-America of the Year in men’s basketball, is the one of two conference players in the sport to be named a distinguished scholar for the year, while Homan is one of three Big Ten football players to earn a 4.0 GPA. Ohio State and Penn State are the only schools to have distinguished scholars in both football and men’s basketball.

For the 2012-13 academic year, 511 Buckeyes were named Ohio State Scholar-Athletes and 227 earned Academic All-Big Ten selections.
