COLUMBUS – While the Ohio State men’s lacrosse program strives for excellence on the field, they also look to offer its student-athletes remarkable experiences off the field. This summer, the Buckeyes will reinforce that philosophy and do something that few other programs can: embark on an eight-day foreign tour of Portugal August 8-15.
The trip will have a packed itinerary with a focus on building the Buckeye brotherhood. The team plans to compete against the English National Team while also learning the Portuguese culture, going site-seeing and participating in community service activities. It’s a trip that promises to be memorable in every way.
“We’re extremely grateful for the opportunity to take the team overseas to Portugal,” said head coach Nick Myers. “We’re couldn’t be more thankful for the Buckeye lacrosse alum who made this once-in-a-lifetime trip possible. The experience in Portugal will be an amazing opportunity for our men to build upon the brotherhood while experiencing a new culture, teaching lacrosse to the youth of Portugal and playing against the English national team.”
The first-ever international trip in program history will begin with flights from Columbus to Philadelphia and then finally to Lisbon. Once in Lisbon – the capital of Portugal – the team will have an opportunity to spend time immersing themselves in the city’s culture while also partaking in the following:
• Kayaking the Algarve coast
• Surfing lessons
• Hiking to the top of Lisbon’s seven hills for incredible views of the city
• Experience a traditional Fado dinner (Fado is the music genre that originated in Portugal and is there most popular type of music)
In addition, the team will visit Monte Gordo, a coastal town approximately three hours south east of Lisbon.
Just as they do in central Ohio, the Buckeyes will take their “grow the game” initiative to Portuguese youth with community service events slated. Ohio State players and coaches will have the opportunity to teach the game to a population that might not otherwise be exposed to lacrosse.
Ohio State will also hit the field for competition against the English National Team the weekend of Aug. 9-11. The Buckeyes are looking forward to fellowship opportunities with the team to learn more about their culture, day-to-day life and how they got started playing the game of lacrosse.
The trip will be a unique experience that each Ohio State men’s lacrosse student-athlete will surely remember forever. It will also offer the Buckeyes a chance to come together early, immerse the freshmen class into the culture of the program and build chemistry heading into the 2020 season.
