Buckeyes to Host B1G Tournament Quarterfinal Game vs. Rutgers

COLUMBUS, Ohio – After finishing the regular season on Sunday, the Ohio State field hockey team will play Rutgers in the quarterfinals of the 2018 Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament. Ohio State will host Rutgers on Sunday, Oct. 28 (1 p.m.) at Buckeye Varsity Field.



  • The Buckeyes enter the 2018 tournament as a No. 4 seed. This is the highest seed that the team has earned since entering the tournament at No. 2 in 2011. This year’s quarterfinal matchup will also be the first time since 2011 that Ohio State has hosted a quarterfinal game of the tournament.
  • Ohio State’s single conference tournament was won in 2001. The team has claimed the conference championship title three times, sharing it in 2001 and 2010 and clinching in 2006.
  • Last season, the Buckeyes defeated Indiana in the play-in game but fell to Michigan in the quarterfinals.
  • Ohio State is 20-24 all-time in the conference tournament.

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights come into the conference tournament having just defeated American 1-0 in overtime to record their fifth consecutive win. The Scarlett Knights are averaging 2.94 goals per game and 2.24 assists per game.

In the teams’ first meeting this season, the Buckeyes picked up their first conference win in a shootout victory over the Scarlett Knights, evening the series record at 4-4. Sunday will be the first time Ohio State will play Rutgers in Columbus in two seasons.



The Buckeyes played their final game of the regular season in Ann Arbor, where they were edged by the Wolverines 2-1 in double overtime. Esther Clotet scored the lone goal for Ohio State and the first goal of the game after a scoreless 54 minutes. Aaliyah Hernandez made seven saves in cage for the team.



  • Ohio State has won 11 games this season, the most wins in a single season since 2011.
  • Ohio State is 4-4 in contests against teams ranked above them in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Coaches Poll on the season and 10-2 when scoring the first goal of the game.
  • Sunday’s game will be the last game on Buckeye Varsity Field for the 2018 senior class that includes Casey Cole, Courtney Daniels, Kelsey Nolan, Hannah Pany, and Ellen Westfall.
  • In the Big Ten, Ohio State ranks third in points (147), goals (52), and assists (43).
  • Esther Clotet has 10 goals on the season, the most on the team this season and the fifth most in the conference.
  • The Buckeyes are 13th nationally with a 1.38 goals against average and 15th with 2.89 goals per game.
  • Senior Kelsey Nolan has been selected to represent Ohio State in the 2018 Victory Sports Tours/NFHCA Division I Senior Game. Nolan has recorded three goals and four assists this season, scored the Buckeyes’ lone penalty stroke of the season and recorded the winning stroke in the shootout win over Rutgers this season.



In this week’s edition of the NFHCA/Penn Monto Division I Coaches Poll, the Buckeyes are ranked No. 23. The team enters the post season up one spot from its preseason ranking of No. 24 in the preseason poll. Ohio State’s highest ranking came last week with the team coming in at No. 21.



The semifinal and final rounds of the 2018 conference tournament will be held at Northwestern on Nov. 2 and 4. The winner of Sunday’s game will face the winner of Game 2 (Maryland vs. Michigan State/Indiana).
