CLE ELUM, Wash. – The Ohio State women’s golf team sits in a tie for seventh place after the opening round of the NCAA Cle Elum Regional Monday at Tumble Creek Golf Club. The Buckeyes are tied with Oregon State and Old Dominion after the first-round 293, three strokes back of sixth place UCF and 12 back of leader Southern California.

The six lowest-scoring teams and top three individuals from non-advancing teams in each regional advance to NCAA Championships hosted by the University of Arkansas May 17-22 at The Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark.

Sophomore Yukie Sasaki carded three birdies to go along with a closing eagle on the par-5 18th to tie for fifth after a 3-under 69 and sits three strokes back of leader Ana Laura Collado of UCF. Freshman Aneka Seumanutafa notched five birdies of her own against three bogeys and is tied for eighth at 2-under.

“I’m proud of how our team played today, specifically Yukie and Aneka, and how we hung in there collectively,” Therese Hession, Ohio State head coach and director of golf, said. “The biggest part of our game plan is to be patient because we want to be in it for all three rounds this week. We’ve talked about how the team does not need to force things. It was important today to get familiar with the golf course after one practice round but if we continue to play smart percentage golf and limit our mistakes, we’ll be in good shape.”

Senior Niki Schroeder, co-medalist of the 2019 Big Ten Championships, sits in a tie for 64th alongside Buckeye freshmen Lauren Peter and Skylar Thompson after a 5-over 77 in the opening round.

As a team, Ohio State is second in the 18-team field at 1-over in par-3 scoring and is tied for third with 59 pars. Individually, Sasaki is tied for second in par-3 scoring at 1-under and tallied one of four eagles in the opening round.
