Buckeyes, Tar Heels Set for Chapel Hill Dec. 4 in 2019 Big Ten/ACC Challenge

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State will travel to North Carolina for a Dec. 4 game vs. the Tar Heels in the 2019 Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The Buckeyes last played in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Nov. 29, 2006, a 98-89 win for the No. 7 Tar Heels over the No. 3 Buckeyes. Ohio State went on to win both the Big Ten regular-season title (15-1), the Big Ten Tournament title and play for the 2007 National Championship. The Buckeyes ended the year 35-4 that season.

Ohio State will open the season vs. Cincinnati in Columbus and also will host Villanova in the 2019 Gavitt Games Nov. 13. Two Big Ten Conference regular season games will take place in early December again this year followed by a trip to Las Vegas to face Kentucky Dec. 21 in the 2019 CBSSports Challenge. West Virginia and the Buckeyes will play Dec. 29 in the first Cleveland Classic at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse.

Ohio State vs. North Carolina Series

Ohio State and North Carolina have met 14 times with the Tar Heels owning a 12-2 record in those games. North Carolina has been ranked among the Top 10 in eight of the last 11 meetings. Ohio State’s last win in the series was an 80-73 win in the 1992 NCAA Midwest Regional in Lexington, Kentucky. The Buckeyes were ranked No. 3 in that game while the Tar Heels were rated No. 18. The Buckeyes are 67-50 all-time vs. teams currently representing the Atlantic Coast Conference. Ohio State last faced an ACC team in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, a 72-62 loss to Syracuse in Columbus Nov. 28 of 2018. The last time Ohio State faced North Carolina was Dec. 17, 2017 in New Orleans in the CBSSports Challenge. No. 5 UNC defeated Ohio State 86-72.

Four Buckeyes on the current 2019-20 roster played in the 2017 meeting with the Tar Heels. Junior Kaleb Wesson scored 12 points on 3-of-6 shooting and a 6-of-7 effort from the foul line. Senior Andre Wesson and juniors Musa Jallow and Kyle Young did not score

Buckeyes in the Challenge

Ohio State has participated in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge for the last 17 years and has a 6-11 record in the event. The Buckeyes first took part in the event during the 2002-03 season against Duke in Greensboro, N.C., a 91-75 Blue Devils’ victory. Ohio State defeated Virginia Tech in Columbus in 2005-06, 69-59, for its first victory in the event. The 2011 game vs. Duke in Columbus pitted the highest combined ranking of Ohio State (2) and Duke (3) in the Buckeyes’ Challenge games. That record was nearly tied in 2012 with the No. 4 Buckeyes traveling to No. 2 Duke. Ohio State was No. 3 and North Carolina came in at No. 7 in the 2006 Challenge. Ohio State has faced a ranked ACC opponent 11 times in the Challenge.
