Buckeyes Tally Seven Team Wins on Day 1 of NU Duals

COLUMBUS, Ohio – After seven rounds of fencing on day one of the Northwestern Duals, the Ohio State women are 3-2 and the men are 4-1. The action continues at Ryan Fieldhouse in Evanston, Ill., Sunday starting at 8 a.m. CT/9 a.m. ET. Seven more rounds will be held on day two.

Round 1

The No. 3-ranked men’s squad started out strong with a dominating 24-3 win over Lawrence. Epee swept the Vikings 9-0 and Stephen Chou and Diego Cervantes both put up three wins each for the Buckeyes.

Round 2

The No. 4 women started with No 1. Princeton for a battle of Top 5 teams. Epee managed a 5-4 win, but sabre and foil both dropped to the Tigers, leaving the Buckeyes at a 15-12 deficit.

Round 3 

Both squads took on Duke in round three. A convincing 7-2 win from men’s sabre pushed the Buckeyes past the Blue Devils, 14-13. Roscoe Swartz and Bence Bende both contributed three wins.

Representatives from all three weapons on the women’s side –  Julieta Toledo, Camila Rivano and Montserrat Viveros – put up three wins each to bolster the Buckeyes over Duke, 15-12. All three squads won 5-4.

Round 4

In a display of consistency, the women pulled out another 15-12 win in round four over Cornell with 5-4 wins from all three squads. Newcomer Montserrat Viveros marked her second consecutive 3-0 round.

Round 5

The men conceded 10 bouts to Princeton, leaving them at a 17-10 deficit. All three weapons fell to the Tigers.

Round 6

The Buckeye men’s squad bounced back in round six to edge out North Carolina, 14-13. Epee and sabre both picked up wins.

In their final round of the day, the women’s side dominated Fairleigh Dickinson in all three weapons, leading to a 22-5 win.

Round 8

To close out the day, the men’s squad swept Northwestern’s club team, 27-0.

What’s Next?

The Buckeyes will begin postseason competition hosting the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships in French Field House in Columbus Feb. 22-23. Ohio State has claimed the last six conference titles.
