COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State’s men’s tennis team bounced back from two losses at the ITA National Indoors in Chicago with a 6-1 victory against Notre Dame inside the Varsity Tennis Center in Columbus. The win improves the Buckeyes’ record to 11-3 as they move into conference play.

After researching the Buckeyes’ current home winning streak, it was discovered that the win today was the 200th-consecutive home victory and not the win over USF on Feb. 8, as was earlier reported.

The doubles matches featured a top ten matchup, as Notre Dame’s fourth-ranked pair of Alex Lawson and Billy Pecor faced seventh-ranked Ralf Steinbach and Kevin Metka for the Buckeyes. With the match on serve at 3-2, Metka and Steinbach broke the Irish’s serve to go up 4-2, and went on to take the match 6-3. Herkko Pollanen and Mikael Torpegaard went up a break early, but fell at number two doubles 6-3.

The doubles decision then came down to court three, where Chris Diaz and Hunter Callahan broke the Irish’s serve to tie the match at 6-6 and send it into a tiebreaker. The Buckeye duo took an early 4-2 lead, and finished the match with a 7-6 (7-5) victory to give Ohio State a 1-0 lead.

Callahan continued his stellar singles play with a straight-set 6-2, 6-2 victory on court 4. Torpegaard followed right behind him with a 6-2, 6-3 victory on court 2 to give the Buckeyes a 3-0 lead. Metka, who has made a profession out of clinching matches, clinched another victory for the Buckeyes on court 6 with a 6-4, 6-3 victory.

Diaz fell on court one in straight sets 6-1, 6-3 to 29th-ranked Quentin Monaghan to give Notre Dame their first point on the board. Pollanen battled back from dropping the first set to take the second set 6-4 and enter into a super tiebreaker to decide the third set, which he dominated 10-5. Steinbach also battled back from a first set loss to take his match in a third set tiebreaker, winning the match 0-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).

The Buckeyes will open Big Ten play next Friday, Feb. 27, when it travels to State College, Pa., to take on Penn State. The Nittany Lions are ranked 27th in the latest ITA poll and qualified for the ITA Indoor Team Championships last weekend. The match is scheduled to begin at 3pm.

The next time Ohio State returns to the Varsity Tennis Center will be Friday, March 6 as it welcomes No. 1 Oklahoma. The Sooners won the ITA Indoor team title last week in Chicago.
