COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team opened the Tennessee Fall Invite Friday afternoon in Knoxville, Tennessee, at the Goodfriend Tennis Center. The Buckeyes swept singles competition vs. ETSU and collected two wins in doubles play vs. host Tennessee on the first day of competition at the three-day event.

The Buckeyes kicked off the tournament sweeping the Buccaneers in singles competition. No. 69 Gabriella De Santis topped Lyn Yee Choo in a super tiebreaker, 7-6, 4-6, 1-0, while Nicole Flower defeated Ashlee Boles after she retired in the first set, 5-0 (ret.) in her first appearance this fall. Sophomore Sandy Niehaus claimed a straight-set victory vs. Ana Gerbassi, 6-1, 6-0.

After winning the first set, 6-3, freshman Anna Sanford captured a second-set tiebreaker, 7-6 (3), to defeat Reginka Nychytailova. Freshman Olivia Sneed notched her first victory of the event with a win vs. Ionna Markesini who retired trailing 4-0 in the second set. Sneed and Sanford are both 5-0 in singles play this fall.

Later in the afternoon, the Scarlet and Gray claimed two of three doubles matches vs. the Volunteers. Miho Kowase and Ferny Angeles Paz, ranked No. 54 In the ITA preseason poll, defeated Olivarez and Lindl, 8-5. Sanford and Sneed teamed up to defeat Guevremont and Tavares, 8-3. The 32nd-ranked Buckeye duo of Niehaus and De Santis fell to Henderson and Williams, 8-2.

The Buckeyes continue action at the event Saturday with doubles vs. Kentucky at noon, followed by singles vs. Tennessee at 1 p.m. at the Goodfriend Tennis Center.
